Stadiums Melbourne – Melbourne Cricket Ground
The MCG, or Melbourne Cricket Ground, is the country’s largest sporting stadium with the capacity to hold 100,024 people. By world standards it’s the 10th largest of any sporting stadium anywhere with the tallest lighting towers, and the largest cricket stadium by capacity. It’s also the largest sporting venue in the Southern Hemisphere.
Conveniently located close to the Melbourne CBD, the MCG is part of the Sports and Entertainment Precinct. Currently it’s the home grounds for several Australian Rules Football teams - Collingwood, Hawthorn, Melbourne and Richmond as well as the Australian and Victorian Cricket teams.
The venue hosts many important sports events annually, including international cricket matches (test, One Day, Twenty20) and the AFL grand final.
Stadiums Melbourne – Docklands Stadium (Etihad / Marvel Stadium)
Docklands Stadium, currently known as Marvel Stadium for sponsorship purposes and previously as Etihad Stadium, is owned by the Australian Football League. It’s the home grounds of the Essendon, St Kilda, Carlton, North Melbourne and Western Bulldogs AFL teams. Australia’s national rugby and football teams, the Melbourne Victory FC and Victoria’s Twenty20 cricket team are also current tenants.
The grounds can hold 56,347 people, making it the 4th largest sporting stadium in Australia after the MCG, Stadium Australia and Perth Stadium. It has a fully retractable roof and is currently the only football stadium in the Southern Hemisphere with one. The roof takes 8 minutes to close.
Stadiums Melbourne – AAMI Park
Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, also known commercially as AAMI Park, has a capacity of 30,050 and was opened in 2010. Along with the MCG, it’s part of Melbourne’s Sports and Entertainment Precinct. AAMI Park is a multi-purpose venue and hosts several different football codes that use a rectangular playing field ie Rugby League / Union, and Football.
The venue is currently home to the Melbourne Victory FC and Melbourne City FC (football), Melbourne Storm (NRL), Melbourne Rebels (super rugby) as well as a couple of smaller Victorian teams.
Stadiums Melbourne – Princes Park (Ikon Park)
Princes Park is the historic home of the AFL Carlton Football Club and the Carlton Cricket Club, and one of Australia’s oldest sports stadiums. Three VFL Grand Finals were played here during the Second World War, one to then record crowds.
Princes Park was first opened in 1897 but has undergone several renovations to upgrade it, including the removal of 2 stands to create an indoor training facility. Today it’s an ultra-modern sporting facility that hosts a variety of sporting fixtures.
The venue has had a number of sponsorship name changes, with the best known probably being Optus Oval. The current naming rights sponsor is Ikon. However it’s more commonly known by its historic name of Princes Park.
Alongside Carlton, several other AFL/VFL teams have also used the grounds as their home venue in the past and it’s currently also the administration and training centre for the Melbourne Rebels Super Rugby team.
Stadiums Melbourne – Junction Oval
Junction Oval is the second home of the Victorian Cricket Team. It’s located in St Kilda and is another historic Melbourne stadium with its name coming from nearby St Kilda Junction. Today it is part of the Albert Park sporting precinct.
The future looks exciting for this sporting stadium after its $40 million AUD upgrade. It will become the ‘home’ of Victorian cricket whilst the CitiPower Centre within the venue allows for year round training and development.
