Group Camping Tours Perth – Walyunga National Park Camping

Don’t feel like heading completely out of town but still want to do a spot of camping? The Walyunga National Park just south of Bullsbrook on the Great Northern Highway is a great destination for local group camping tours in Perth. It’s also one of the few places that offer bush camping within the Perth metropolitan area.

The Avon River flows through the park on its way to meet up with the Swan River. The park itself covers both sides of a steep valley behind the Darling Scarp in the Darling Ranges. There are heaps of walking trails, wading pools and of course if you choose the first weekend in August you can watch the final stages of the white water Avon Descent.

The Walyunga National Park camping area is set up in a cleared section of bush just several minutes drive from the main picnic area.

Every long weekend a stream of traffic clogs the major arterial routes out of Perth. Many of them are heading north to Moore River, just an hours drive away from Perth’s leafy northern suburbs. Moore River is a river; it empties into the Indian Ocean but has a sandbar across the mouth that normally isolates the river from the ocean during periods of low rainfall.

Nestled alongside the river mouth is the village of Guilderton, a popular destination for campers. The town is a great base from which to explore other areas like The Pinnacles, the historic town of Gingin, and the Gravity Discovery Centre. There are also a number of wineries in the region and if you visit in spring, the wildflowers are amazing.

The only place to camp in town is the Guilderton Caravan Park, which has both caravan and tent sites.

Dwellingup is a small town around one and a half hours drive south of Perth. It’s a very popular destination for group camping tours in Perth. Lane Poole Reserve, which is just out of town has 10 camping areas within it so there are plenty of options for camping.

You can choose between one of the larger sites with wide open camping grounds to private sites that only have room for 2 campers. If you go during winter, take plenty of warm clothing but the trade off is the roaring campfire you can enjoy.

The Murray River runs through Lane Poole Reserve and offers swimming, fishing, canoeing and white water rafting. The surrounding hills are also idea for mountain biking and 4Wdriving.

Heading south from Dwellingup you’ll come to Waroona Dam or Lake Navarino, another spot to stay on a group camping tour of WA’s south-west. There are a couple of camping options here. The Lake Navarino Holiday Park offers on-site accommodation or you can pitch a tent in the camping ground close to the dam.

The dam itself is popular for a variety of water sports like skiing, fishing and swimming. For 4WD enthusiasts there’s also plenty to do on the many tracks around the Dam.

From Waroona Dam you can head further south before turning east to Honeymoon Pool on the beautiful tranquil Collie River in the Wellington National Park. The Department of Parks and Wildlife (DPAW) operate a tents only camping ground here with river swimming and canoeing options.

There are BBQ facilities and camping tables throughout the camping ground as well as plenty of shade from overhanging Peppermint trees. The ambient, tranquil atmosphere of the place makes for a lovely quiet camping experience to wind up a group camping tour of the southwest. It’s also a great weekend camping destination in its own right.
