Schools / Universities Melbourne – Monash University

Monash University in Victoria’s second oldest university. It was established in 1958 and has 4 campuses in Victoria, one in Malaysia and several overseas graduate schools and research / teaching centres.

The university owns major research facilities both in Australia and overseas. Along with its 100 or so research centres and 17 co-operative research centres, it also has the Monash Science Technology Research and Innovation Precinct, the Australian Stem Cell Centre, the Australian Synchrotron, and the Monash Law School.

Monash is a member of the Group of Eight, the ASAIHL, and the M8 Alliance of Academic Health Centers, Universities and National Academies.

Schools / Universities Melbourne – Deakin University

Deakin University was named after Alfred Deakin, Australia's second Prime Minister. Established in 1974, Deakin is a public university with main campuses in Burswood, Geelong and Warrnambool. They also offer remote learning via their cloud platform.

As a research institution, Deakin is world class. It receives around $50 million AUD each year in research funding from research partners. The university is also one of Australia’s favoured destinations for overseas students, attracted by the quality of the eduction provided and the world class facilities on offer.

 

Schools / Universities Melbourne – Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology

The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, or RMIT University, is a public research university with its major campus within the Melbourne CBD. It’s the largest provider of tertiary eduction in Australia, and also one of the wealthiest.

RMIT has 2 other campuses in Melbourne along with a training site on the Royal Australian Air Force base. Overseas it maintains 2 campuses in Vietnam and a co-ordinating centre in Barcelona in Spain.

RMIT began life as the Working Men's College back in 1887, making it one of Victoria’s oldest in terms of longevity of operation. Officially however it only became a university in 1992 after a merger with the Phillip Institute of Technology.

Swinburne University of Technology was founded in 1908 and is named after its founder George Swinburne. It was originally called the Eastern Suburbs Technical College.

The university’s main campus is in Hawthorne but it has another 2 elsewhere in the Melbourne metropolitan area as well as one in Sarawak in Malaysia. Swinburne also owns Swinburne College, a facility that provides pathway education courses to prepare students for university.

Swinburne prides itself on maintaining a close relationship with business and industry, which enables it to ensure its curriculum remains commercially relevant and viable. Accordingly, there is a strong focus on technology, entrepreneurship and innovation.

Schools / Universities Melbourne – The University of Melbourne

The University of Melbourne is Victoria’s first university and the second oldest in Australia. It was established in 1863, with its main campus in Parkville close to the CBD. It has other campuses across Victoria as well that house its 11 academic units.

With its strong ties to research centres and institutes such as the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, the Grattan Institute, the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research, and the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, Melbourne is well regarded in research circles. Its graduate schools – the Melbourne Law School, Melbourne Medical School, and Melbourne Business School are likewise highly regarded by industry.

The university is one of Australia’s Circle of Eight member universities and is the second Australian university in the Association of Pacific Rim Universities, along with the University of Sydney.
