Sydney Foreshore

The heart and soul of the Chinese New Year celebrations is the festival of the coloured Lunar Lanterns. Although the parade may not take place on its usual route due to the light railway works, it will still be a fantastic event, and one not to be missed. The event normally showcases over a thousand performers gathered together in over forty different performance groups.

The marvellous Sydney harbour will have its most iconic buildings lit up in a red hue including, the Town Hall, Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Opera House and many more.

Central Business District

During the whole of the festivities, Martin Place will be transformed into Sydney’s Lunar Lantern hub. Over fifty metres of glowing red lanterns will be stretched overhead, illuminating festival stalls selling Chinese mementos and lucky charms to remember the wonderful occasion.

Further along in World Square there will be the popular Shaanxi Cultural Market which will also have stalls selling handmade Chinese goods and will host a spectacular Lion Dance event. Usually round about Pitt Street Shopping Mall there will be a display of purple Royal Rooster lanterns dangling overhead.

Dragon Boat Race

One of the most spectacular events of the entire celebration of the Year of the Dog will be the world famous Sydney Dragon Boat Races. For those fortunate to be down at the harbourside they can witness this traditional exciting racing.

Giant 12 metre boats invoke the spirit and the power of centuries ago, as the dragon comes alive to the sound of pulsating drums and the shouting paddlers. The colour and the pageantry has to be seen to be believed under the watchful gaze of the iconic harbour buildings.
