Hastings Caves & Thermal Springs

The Hasting Caves & Thermal Springs are only around an hour and a half drive from the south of Hobart.

The caves were formed millions of years ago in 1917, they were discovered by timber workers. The 45 minute guided tour by a park and wildlife guide will let you discover these magnificent sights for yourself.

The subterranean formations which include stalactites, flowstone, columns, shawls, stalagmites and helictites. The total number of steps inside the cave is 500 and they are all equipped with handrails to guide you through to your discovery.

There is a thermal swimming pool which is located at the site too, and you are allowed to swim in these heated pools. The temperature of the water is around 28 degrees celsius and the pool has forest and ferns in the surroundings giving you a peaceful backdrop.

Douglas Apsley National Park

The Douglas Apsley National Park is a great place to take the kids. In the Summer months there is a waterhole where some of the locals go and swim. However, if your taking the kids, make sure they are supervised.

Put the swimming to one side, the National Park also has rivers, dolerite cliffs, gorges, waterfalls and some fantastic walking routes to choose from.

There is also a campsite located here too so you can take to kids on a great few days and experience everything that Douglas Apsley Has to offer.

 

Don River Railway

Located on the North West Coast, The Don River Railway is the premier tourist attraction in this part of the region.

It is also one of Australia’s finest heritage passenger carrying railways.

The station is located 5 -10 minutes from Devonport and it is open everyday from 9am till 4pm but be sure to check national holidays.

The train ride lasts around 30 minutes and takes you along the picturesque Don River.

As passenger trains seemed to have vanished from Tasmania, this one is still active. The trains are either steam locomotive or vintage diesel locomotives.
